CHC43115 Certificate IV in Disability

Provide training and support to people with disabilities, enhancing their ability to achieve greater independence, empowerment and community participation whilst working in community settings and clients’ homes.

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and well-being. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

Possible Job Titles May Include:

  • Disability Support Worker
  • Disability Officer-Day Support
  • Care Supervisor

Course Structure

The course includes a classroom component, off-campus study components and industry placement. Assessment is based on competency, which is the ability to demonstrate specific skills and will involve a combination of assessment methods. These assessments can include written assignments, discussion, interviews, workplace projects and practical demonstrations.

You will be required to complete 120 hours of unpaid practical placement during or at the end of the course at a workplace as agreed on with Diversitat.

This qualification and the various delivery methods have been designed following consultations with industry, learners and other stakeholders.

Work Placement

Diversitat organises and administers work placements to students during course services where required. The opportunity of work placement provides:

  • The student with the opportunity to gain real world experience in their chosen industry;
  • The student to gain initial access to a potential future employer; and
  • The host employer to support and ‘test’ a student as a potential employee.

Workplace learning programs are to achieve curriculum outcomes and enhance the vocational, educational and social development of students.

Diversitat ensures that students with special needs are provided with opportunities on the same basis as other students. This includes identifying and liaising with the workplace around adjustments and accommodations that students with disabilities may require.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in this course students must:

  • Be able to pass a Working With Children Check and a National Police Check
  • Be 18 years of age
  • Have at least the required entry level language, learning and numeracy skills in accordance with the Australian Core Skills Framework levels (Learning L3, Reading R2, Writing W2, Oral Communication OC3 and Numeracy skills N2).  This will be determined by Diversitat Training by way of an online test followed by an interview (Pre-Training Review).
  • Be able to pass a disability worker exclusion check

Workplace based students must also be working in a suitable role for at least 10 hours a week and in their role for at least 3 months before commencing the course

Workplace based students

A suitable workplace role is a role where a student is managing, coordinating and/or delivering direct support to individuals or groups of individuals in the context of community services, case management or social housing and where the workplace confirms:

  • The student will be able to complete workplace-based tasks
  • It will provide the student with access to the required resources and equipment for this purpose
  • It accepts the student will be able to upload video evidence of undertaking workplace tasks
  • It agrees to provide the required supervision and third-party reports

Technology Requirements

Diversitat Training qualifications require students to have an intermediate understanding of the use of computers and the internet. If they do not have skills at the required level they will be provided with additional support such as one on one training, mentoring and peer support. Students are recommended to have access to a computer and a broadband internet connection at home.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

All students are assessed prior to enrolment to ensure they achieve competence at the required ACSF level utilising Diversitat’s Qualification Suitability Assessment tool (LLN Robot) and during the pre-training review interview.

The tool assesses Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Oral Communication and Learning skills; as well as the applicant’s suitability for the specific qualification applied for.

A Pre-Training Assessment is conducted prior to enrolment to determine the ACSF levels of the student. The assessment tools used are accompanied by a marking guide. This marking guide ensures consistency between assessors. All staff undertaking assessment of the completed ACSF pre training assessment tools have received training in this task.

Pre-Training Review (pre- enrolment process)

To ensure that you enrol in a course that is the most suitable and appropriate and one that will offer you the best opportunity for success, prior to enrolment you will be required to undertake a Pre Training Review, which includes;

  • Your aspirations and interests and consider how this will lead you to the job you want or to further study
  • The skills, experiences and education you already have
  • How your language, literacy and numeracy skills will best suit the course
  • How we can ensure the learning strategies and materials suit you
  • If you need support with access and the use of technology
  • How you prefer to study
  • If you need any other support to help you

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) involves a formal recognition of the skills and knowledge you have already achieved through previous studies, work and life experiences.

To obtain Recognition of Prior Learning you must satisfy the requirements for the entire unit, not just some parts of it.

If you believe you qualify, we will formally assess your existing skills and knowledge and determine if they can count towards your qualification and shorten the period of training. This will take into account;

  • work-related training courses
  • on-the-job skills and work experience
  • volunteer and community work
  • a combination of all of the above

There is Fees for RPL are determined based on units and nominal hours.

Credit Transfer

Obligation to recognise qualifications and statement of attainments (Credit Transfer)

It is our obligation to recognise qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other RTOs which align to your proposed course of study. This is known as Credit Transfer (CT).

You may be eligible for credit transfer of units if you have studied before. This means you will not need to repeat a unit if you can provide certified evidence of successfully completing a unit that is equivalent to a unit currently included in a course or traineeship.

To apply for a Credit Transfer you will need to present the original certified copy of Qualification or Statement of Attainment and a transcript clearly indicating the course and units undertaken and results obtained. This should take place prior to the commencement of the course.

If you are a full fee paying student, You will need to provide the evidence within 2 weeks of your enrolment application or you will be charged tuition for those units.

There is no fee for Credit Transfer.

This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding to eligible individuals.

Different levels of Government subsidy are available – Diversitat Training can help you to determine if you are eligible for a Government subsidy of your training through Skills First. Am I eligible for a funded place?

You may be eligible for funding support from the State or Commonwealth Government under a range of training support and incentive programs.

The Victorian Government Skills First funding is making vocational education and training more accessible to students who do not hold a post-school qualification, or who want to gain a higher level qualification than they already hold.

The Skills First funding is an entitlement to a Victorian government subsidised place in recognised training that can be accessed at any time and it will continue to be available for training at successively higher levels.

However, please note, undertaking this course may affect your eligibility for funded training with the Victorian Government in the future, as:

  • You can’t start* more than 2 subsidised courses in a year.
  • You can’t do more than 2 subsidised courses at the same time.
  • You can’t start* more than 2 subsidised courses at the same qualification level in your life.

Additional Information

Induction before you start the course

You will be given a formal induction at the beginning of your course. Important details are further communicated in the Student Handbook which can be downloaded from Current Students page.

There is a formal induction checklist that you will be taken through and at the end of induction you will be asked to sign the checklist to verify that you understand the details, including competency based assessment and reasonable adjustment, assessment methods, due dates and delivery requirements, surveys and the complaints/appeals process.

Alongside this there are also worksite inductions conducted if you are participating in placement as part of your training.

Work Placement

Mandatory Placement Hours Required: 120

 

This course requires work placement. We have a network of community agencies who will provide work placement for our students. If you wish to complete your placement at an alternative provider please discuss this with your trainer.

Issuing Certificates

On successful completion, participants will be awarded CHC43115 Certificate IV in Disability. For unit completion only, a Statement of Attainment will be awarded.

Access & Equity / Reasonable Adjustment

Modification or adjustments may be made to the learning materials and methods suitable to the student.

At times students may require adjustment to assessment (for example students with a physical disability). By applying reasonable adjustment, aiming to respect the student’s learning needs, whilst delivering quality training, and promote access and equity consistently to all students ensures a fair and reasonable assessment and work judged on merit, demonstrating no victimisation nor discrimination.
