Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is an introduction to English Language and a starting point for those who wish to complete a course in Spoken and Written English.

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is an Australian Government funded program that helps eligible migrants and refugees to learn basic English language skills to help them to settle successfully in Australia. As well as helping to build your English language skills, by participation in the AMEP, you will learn about Australian society, culture and customs. You will also meet other new arrivals, who may have similar backgrounds, experiences and goals. Participating in the AMEP will probably help you make many new friends in Australia.

Home Tutor Scheme

If you are eligible for the AMEP and are unable to attend classes, you may be able to learn English with a tutor at home or a location that is suitable for both of you. The tutor can discuss with you the best way for you to learn English and help you understand daily life in Australia. Please call 5260 6000 for more information

What is Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)?

Adult migrant English program is a Government funded programme to help new migrants and refugees learn English for free.
There is free child care for parents attending classes
Students can study:

  • In the classroom
  • At home with a tutor
  • Online

Who can study in AMEP classes?

Permanent visa holders who are 18 years old or older.

This service is also offered to some temporary visa holders.

How much does AMEP cost?

510 hours of FREE English lessons.

When can I start AMEP?

You can start the program anytime in the first five years of living in Australia.

 What happens after I register with AMEP?

First you will have an interview and after that you start a class that is suitable for you to study English.

 What do I study in the classroom?

  • Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE).
  • Certificate in General English for Adults (CGEA)

 How many times a week do I have to go to classes?

You will study:

  • full-time: Monday to Thursday 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

 How can I learn English if I can’t go to class?

If you can’t go to classes to study English due to health or other issues, we can help with:

  • Volunteer Home Tutor: A volunteer home tutor will come to your house and help you learn English.
  • Distance Learning: You will have a teacher who can help you learn English on the phone or online (on the internet)
